Getting a filling is one of the most common procedures that are performed in a dental office. However, there are many preventive steps you can take to avoid the procedure and keep your smile healthy. Here are a few tips:

  • Brush Properly: It’s not just how often you brush, but also your technique that matters. Spend two minutes gently brushing your teeth at a 45-degree angle, moving the brush in circular motions. Make sure you reach all surfaces, including the backs of teeth, and pay extra attention to molars which are cavity prone.
  • Floss Every Day: Flossing is an important activity because it removes plaque and debris between teeth that brushing alone can miss. Take the time to floss thoroughly once a day, carefully going slightly under the gumline on each tooth.
  • Limit Sugar: Sugary foods feed the bacteria that cause decay. While you don’t have to eliminate sweets entirely, be mindful of frequency and portion size. Rinse with water after consuming sugary drinks or sweets. Also, try to avoid snacking on carbs throughout the day and stick to meal times instead.
  • Get Regular Checkups: Regular cleanings and exams allow the dentist to spot issues early and remove built-up tartar and plaque before they can harm your tooth enamel. Adult patients should get cleanings every six months.
